Notice to Employees

SAMPLE NOTICE TO EMPLOYEES – 3/20/2020

This information is subject to change as the final DOL recommendations have not been distributed. 

Emergency Sick Pay will pay up to 80 hours of regular pay at 100% up to $511/day and $5,110 aggregate) for the following:

  • The employee is subject to a quarantine or isolation ordered by a health care professional or the government;
  • The employee is experiencing symptoms of COVID-19, is seeking a medical diagnosis or is experiencing similar conditions of COVID-19;

Emergency Sick Pay will pay up to 80 hours at 2/3 of an employee’s regular pay (up to $200/day and $2,000 aggregate) for the following:

  • The employee is caring for an individual subject to a quarantine or isolation as described above; or
  • The employee is caring for a son or daughter whose school or child care provider is unavailable.
  • This leave does not have to be consecutive as in the case when parental duties are being shared by a spouse or another caregiver.

*Employees may not be required to use personal PTO, vacation or sick pay in lieu of this Emergency Sick Pay.

Emergency Family and Medical Leave (this leave is separate from any prior or current FMLA leave an employee may be under).

  • Covers and allows pay of 2/3rd the employee’s regular pay (up to $200/day and $10,000 aggregate) who have to care for a dependent or who no longer has school or normal provided daycare. This pay starts the 3rd week the employee is out and may continue for 10 more weeks.  (The total leave time equals up to 12 weeks).   This pay will most likely follow the 2 weeks of emergency paid leave as stated above.
  • This leave does not have to be consecutive as in the case when parental duties are being shared by a spouse or another caregiver.

Requests for leaves should be made to your supervisor as soon in advance as possible.  For sick leave, physician documentation is required when available.

*PTO, vacation or sick pay may be substituted, at the employee’s request, when Emergency Sick or FMLA is not provided.

Employees who experience a layoff, furlough or reduction in force may file for unemployment benefits at www.labor.alabama.gov or by calling 1-866-234-5382.  For other states call your local unemployment office.  The current maximum weekly benefit in Alabama is $275.00.
